Hancock Park Private Residence

The owners of this 1920’s Spanish bungalow in Hancock Park sought to maximize their outdoor spaces to accommodate the needs of family and friends, both children and adults. A specimen Coral tree was integrated into the back garden to provide much needed shade as well as to realize the owner’s dream for her kids to have a tree to climb. Nestled into a corner is a wood play structure, designed by Meg Fain, that anchors what used to be a forgettable planter wall. By turning their garage into a guest house with large, folding glass doors, a previously bleak driveway was activated and transformed into a large dining/entertaining patio. Between guest house and play structure is a small Ipe wood deck that is the perfect place to read, meditate, or watch children play. Two separate back patios off the house were united into one cohesive patio with Spanish tiles, further emphasizing the character of the home. Anchoring the lawn is a beautiful water feature, tying the entire garden together with the sound of running water.
